For this piece in my concentration I created a piece with mixed media involving my pre-calculus teacher from summer school. So far I have been drawing from photos and most likely will in my future projects for my concentration. However, I plan on distorting them as time progresses showing how you slowly forget people as time goes by to the point where you would not be able to recognize them. After my first piece of a very realistic portrait I began to take other approaches rather than the typical acrylic portrait painting. For this project I used mixed media including newspaper and pages from various novels. I also used ink and watercolour. This piece fit into my concentration because it involves a person that I will most likely never see again. Throughout this process I have altered my ideas in my concentration, for example I am beginning to make connections with the subjects personalities with the technique I use in their pieces. The photo at the top is the piece I am currently finishing, and the piece below it is something that inspired me to use newsprint in one of my concentration pieces. I chose this piece because I fell in love with the simplicity of it. Although there is not alot of detail, the depth and undertone immediatily stood out to me. The smooth strokes and attention to detail enhanced the meaning which was that we are all so small in comparison to space.
The challenge I chose to do was deconstruct. At first I struggled with this project because I was unsure of which challenge to take on. As I thought of an idea for one of the choices I decided to completely alter my original plan and chose to deconstruct my piece because I believed it further enhances the main idea. The theme of this piece was loneliness and depression. By deconstructing it, or 'shattering' it, I introduced another point of feeling broken, to an extent of impossible repair. The reason why I decided to display her heart was to illustrate how she is vulnerable in her present state. I believe that I was successful in illustrating the theme and main idea of the piece, however, I believe that I could have done more contouring and shading on the woman. I managed to complete this project a couple days after the due date by completing it at home.
Both of my ideas for my concentration centre around portraits of people while using different mediums in each piece. One of which would be acrylic paint, another collage, charcoal, and so on. One of the ideas for my concentration is portraits of people who I met and saw in India during my Me to We service trip. During this trip I met many men, woman, and children who had infectious smiles, therefore, a large theme in this concentration would be happiness.
The other idea which I may focus on is portraits of people who I will never see again. This would include people from any trips I have been on, or pictures I have of people in passing on streets who I may have never even talked to. These pieces would also be made using many different mediums. The difference in this idea is the theme would not only focus on happiness but a range of emotions which I would illustrate through different techniques. Julian Charrère is a French-Swiss artist based in Berlin, Germany. He mainly uses sculptural objects and images, both moving and still. His main theme and inspiration come from human activity, ecology, the environment and time which connects his pieces together. Some similarities in the works I have chosen in regards to style are simplicity, and depth. None of these pieces are greatly detailed or colourful, however, each has a greater meaning which creates purpose and shows an intent from the artist. This overall meaning creates a strong message to viewers which captures their interest and curiosity.
