Since I was very young I have made up stories. From playing dress up with my sister, to playing house with my friends, I lived in an alternate reality where everything was perfect. As a kid I also loved to exaggerate and make up stories, I would tell to my friends, to the point where I would believe they were true as well. This continued on even up until now. Whenever things are looking down I like to believe that things will get better. I like to dream about my future. Where I will be in 5, 10, or even 30 years. Although I know it is most likely not going to be true, I love to think that I will live the happily ever after you read about in fairytales. With the beautiful house and kids and a husband. Although these are only dreams, I like to believe that they will come true one day. The myths of my past and the predictions for my future are unverifiable, but I accept and perpetuate them to create happy memories and hope for myself and for my future wherever I may end up.

One of the most important decisions I have made is going on a Me to We trip to Udaipur, India, and taking part in a trip in Ottawa, Ontario, called Encounters With Canada. These two trips have been the most influential trips of my life. When Mr.Garland approached me asking me if I wanted to take part in this trip I was unsure. After a couple days contemplating this I decided that I might as well go, after all it was only for one week. As soon as I got there and met the people I would be staying with for the week I knew it was going to be amazing. It was absolutely amazing and I met people from all over Canada. The Me to We trip I went on to India was a service trip where I built a health centre in a small town where one was desperately needed. After days of working and being able to see the difference I was making, and meeting the people who would be using this health centre I knew I was contributing to something amazing. In fall I actually withdrew from this trip but after much convincing from my family and teachers, I was persuaded to go and I am very grateful that I went. Some the missed opportunities opportunities I have went through are the sleep overs I missed as a kid. Although this does not seem like a big deal, as a child I got very home sick and every time I went home early I felt guilty and left out. These decisions shaped me for who I am today.
The person who has influenced me most is my mom. Throughout my whole life she has supported every one of my decisions. She is the reason I am able to go to Collingwood school, and have all of the opportunities I have had. From supporting me in choir and multiple plays I was apart of in elementary school, to all of my sports practices and games. She is one of the main reasons for who I am today. Starting at a young age she taught me right from wrong and has comforted me when I was sad, and played with me when I was feeling lonely.
My name is Taylor Morrey. I have lived in the same house my entire life in North Vancouver with my two older siblings. While I was born in Vancouver like my father, my mother is from a small town 2 hours away from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Although I am still living at home with my mom, my brother and sister go to university in Ontario, and although we are many provinces apart we still keep in touch. I would describe myself as cheerful and a little weird (but then again who isn't). All of my experiences have shaped me into who I am today, and I have very little regrets.
For this project Pinerest and my own self interest in the object were what inspired my work. Viewing many of the different photos of mechanical objects in different angles and perceptions on Pinterest helped me choose what I envisioned for my end result. I hope that as other people are viewing my art, it will cause them to see the different textures and depth of the camera which they would not typically be focused on in a photo. In order to understand my work the viewer needs to understand the amount of thought that went into this project and how long it took to to create the end result. A significant artist choice I made was to create a textured background with coffee. I wanted to create a background which created an older feel to the drawing. A comment I received which changed my project was to go deeper into the drawing by adding more texture and even incorporate a while pencil for the metal parts of the camera. A challenge I experienced during this project was how the coffee made the paper a light brown rather than white, which was what I needed when trying to draw the metal parts of the camera. I solved this by using a white pencil to simply show the lightest parts of the metal. A strength in my work is the lens, in which I believe that the depth and light are well demonstrated. A significant thing that I have learned while working on this project is how the different types of pencils create very different textures and shades. This can have a great impact on what you are trying to create.
I feel that this project could be worked on further. For example, on the sweater more texture could have been brought out by further shading. By improving the depth in both the sweater and the face in general could have improved the piece as a whole.
In this project I used both blind and broken contour line. The majority of the piece was done in contour line, however the right eye was drawn using blind contour. During this project the facial feature which I needed to incorporate into my piece was a mouth. I had trouble placing it because if I were to use it as a mouth on the face then it would be greatly disproportionate. Therefore, I decided to incorporate it in another aspect of my project. I decided to use it as a hair piece as a decorative accessory. With this hair piece I decided to make it stand out by using another primary colour, red. For the rest of this project I used blues for the darker areas of the painting and different shades of yellow to emphasize the lighter parts of the face and sweater. This allowed others to see the depth of different parts of the image and created an overall 3D look. Overall I enjoyed working with Prismacolour and was able to create value with the different colours I used. In the end, this project was successful in parts such as creating depth in the hair, face and neck, however, I believe that I could have improved this piece as a whole by incorporating further detail and texture. Also, with further shading and value this piece could have improved greatly. Therefore, in later assignment I would like to focus more on detail, value, and tone. |
